Habitat Restoration and Beer Release Celebrate Healthy Rivers and Earth Day

Continuing its leadership in environmental sustainability, Redhook Brewery in Woodinville is the first brewery site in the Puget Sound region to earn Salmon-Safe certification, a designation that means that Redhook is proactively and significantly improving the environmental health of its site along the Sammamish River. The certification announcement will be made Thursday at a habitat restoration event at Redhook.

To qualify for Salmon-Safe certification, Redhook met rigorous conservation requirements including: commitment to additional water conservation, reduction of storm water runoff from parking lots and buildings, as well as ongoing restoration of its site along the Sammamish River that flows past the property on its way to Lake Washington. The river is home to Chinook, coho, sockeye, steelhead and cutthroat trout. As part of the effort to promote biodiversity, crews will begin restoring a buffer along the riparian corridor on Thursday. The brewery will with be working with Stewardship Partners’ Adopt-a-Buffer restoration crews and volunteers to plant native trees and shrubs as they remove invasive plants along the river. This is event is part of a long-term effort to restore the riparian buffer.

On April 18th, Redhook will release two beers that feature malt and hops sourced from farms that are Salmon-Safe certified. Salmon-Safe certified hops and malts are grown in a way that conserve and protect water quality, support soil protection, and promote biodiversity. The release of Upstream Lager and Copperhook English Ale will be in celebration of Earth Day. Both will be available on draft at the Redhook pub. In May, look for Copperhook at craft beer bars and local pubs around the Puget Sound Region. A portion of the proceeds from both beers sold at the Woodinville pub will go toward Mid-Sound Fisheries Enhancement Group.
