Salmon-Safe Applegate is an innovative community-based partnership working to protect water quality and biodiversity in one of the Northwest's most important salmon watersheds. Nearly eight years ago, Applegate River Watershed Council approached Salmon-Safe with the idea of a locally-based Salmon-Safe initiative in this tributary to southern Oregon's Rogue River. The project that has evolved from these initial discussions is led by Tim Franklin at Applegate River Watershed Council. The Applegate River watershed, located in the Siskiyou Mountains of southwestern Oregon, is one of the most biologically diverse areas of the country with native salmonid species including steelhead trout and chinook and coho salmon. Salmon-Safe and our partners launched the effort to provide on-the-ground restoration assistance, educational outreach, and market-based incentives to promote wildlife habitat and water quality protection.
Response from the Applegate's agricultural community to Salmon-Safe has been enthusiastic. More than two dozen farms have been certified, including Herb Pharm and Pacific Botanicals , two of the nation's leading growers of herbal medicinals. Download Salmon-Safe Applegate grower list
Salmon-Safe continues to offer complimentary certification to farmers located in the Applegate to encourage the wide-scale adoption of water quality and habitat conservation practices.
